Kaklik Cave

Have you ever traveled to the Pamukkale region of Turkey? One of the beautiful and stunning natural attractions in this area is Kaklik Cave, which captures the attention of tourists and nature lovers alike. This cave is a unique and fascinating place, often referred to as the “small underground Pamukkale” because its interior resembles the famous travertine terraces. Located near Pamukkale and Denizli, Kaklik Cave is less renowned than other natural and tourist attractions in the region, making it a quieter and more secluded area to visit, as well as more affordable.

Kaklik Cave is considered one of the best caves to visit in Turkey, showcasing an extraordinary world inside. We recommend a visit to all those interested in cave exploration, and even to those who may not typically seek out cave experiences. To learn more about this captivating cave, follow the contents prepared by our tourism magazine.

Where is Kaklik Cave?

Kaklik Cave, one of Turkey’s most beautiful and pristine natural attractions, is situated 30 kilometers east of Denizli city in the southwest of the country. This cave was formed by the erosion of limestone and sulfur rocks by an underground stream. What makes this cave unique is the presence of fog, which originates from the high altitudes of Mount Mali, approximately 1277 meters high, and descends into the plains, cotton fields, and vineyards below.

The entrance of Kaklik Cave is near Koker Hamam spring, earning it the name “smelly bath” due to the sulfur fumes in the vicinity. However, it’s worth noting that the interior of the cave contains dangerous levels of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, with limited oxygen. As a result, only certain sections of the cave are open to tourists.

Introducing Kaklik Cave

Kaklik Cave was formed in the early 21st century following the collapse of the roof of an underground cavity, resulting from a hot underground flow. The cave is composed of various materials, including Mesozoic limestone, Eocene marl, clay, sandstone, conglomerates, and travertine. Inside the cave, there is a mass of travertine stone resembling a sinkhole, formed by water flow from underground springs.

The roof of Kaklik Cave is open and wide, allowing sunlight to penetrate inside. Continuous water dripping into the cave has led to the growth of dense mosses and vines on the cave walls, giving them a green hue during daylight hours due to the ivy and algae cover.

The entrance area of Kaklik Cave measures 13 meters wide and 190 meters long, with its deepest part reaching about 14 meters. Inside the cave, there are ladder pools and travertines formed in a similar manner by the internal waters. The difference between the travertine stones of Pamukkale and those inside the cave lies in their size and location; the travertine stones of Kaklik Cave are smaller and located inside the mountain, unlike those of Pamukkale.

Natural features of Kaklik Cave

The entrance to Kaklik Cave consists of stairs, and visitors should exercise caution as there is a risk of the stairs being slippery. The cave area has a circular shape, allowing visitors to walk around and eventually return to the starting point. Upon entering the cave, visitors may notice a strong smell of hydrogen sulfide, which is normal and typically dissipates after a while.

Tourists descend the wide wooden stairs and follow them to reach turquoise blue bridges and streams. The color of the water is not due to sunlight; rather, it is rich in minerals, giving it its unique turquoise hue.

Plants and vegetation covering the cave walls receive enough light from the cave’s roof and entrance to grow. However, additional lighting has been installed along the path for the convenience and safety of tourists and visitors.

Recreational facilities of Kaklik Cave

Kaklik Cave boasts stunning natural beauty both inside and around its surroundings, making it a must-visit destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike. However, beyond the visual splendor of the cave itself, there are additional facilities in the area that can keep visitors entertained for hours. Some of the tourism facilities at Kaklik Cave include:

  • A mineral water pool located outside the cave, where a natural hot spring bubbles to the surface, creating a pool of mineral water that allows tourists to swim freely. This pond is also home to turtles and ducks.
  • Additionally, kiosks have been set up among the trees to offer a variety of fast food options.
  • It’s worth noting that the cave is well-lit compared to others, making it easier for individuals with phobias to visit.”

Conditions for visiting Kaklik Cave

Kaklik Cave is open to the public every day of the week from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of 5 liras per person. Please note that the entrance fee may vary slightly each year due to possible price adjustments.

Access route to Kaklik Cave

The most convenient way to reach Kaklik Cave is by private car, as there is limited public transportation available in the area, especially since it’s primarily industrial. If you plan to use public transportation such as buses or shared taxis, you’ll need to first travel from Denizli to Kaklik, and then arrange for a private taxi or car to take you to the cave entrance.

Alternatively, you can opt for organized tours to Kaklik Cave, which can be arranged through your hotel or accommodation before your trip to Turkey. It’s important to note that visiting Kaklik Cave is typically part of a larger tour package and cannot be booked independently.

Important points about Kaklik Cave

Here are some important considerations and conditions for visiting Kaklik Cave:

  • The mineral water springs within the cave are known for their therapeutic properties, which can aid in the treatment of various skin and lung diseases. If you’re spending time in the Denizli area, consider visiting Kaklik Cave to experience the benefits of the mineral baths.
  • In certain parts of Kaklik Cave, the water level may rise to the wooden bridges. Therefore, it’s advisable to either remove your shoes or wear waterproof footwear to prevent discomfort.
  • Before entering the cave and immersing yourself in the water, it’s recommended to remove any jewelry or ornaments you may be wearing. The mineral-rich water inside the cave, particularly containing sulfur, can tarnish or alter the appearance of silver and other materials.”
