Sightseeing places in Trabzon

Yes, you guessed it right, this city is called Trabzon. From monasteries and mountain villages and natural landscapes to numerous castles and churches, you can find a lot in this city. Trabzon is located on the historic silk road. This geographical location has caused the intersection of different religions, languages and cultures. Sumela Monastery
A very amazing structure called Sumela Monastery was located in Trabzon. This structure is located on a steep rock overlooking a wonderful landscape. This Greek Orthodox monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This monastery dates back to 386 AD. This monastery was located at an altitude of 1200 meters above the Altindere National Park. Rock church, students’ room, kitchen, guest room, library and fountain are among the attractions of Soumla Monastery. The use of this fountain is considered to collect mountain water.

A large building with a balcony can be seen in front of Soumla Monastery, which was dedicated to the monks and dates back to 1860. One of the strangest parts of this monastery is the rock church. This church has an unusual appearance. Covering the entrance of this church as well as its exterior with beautiful paintings made this building unique. These paintings tell stories from the Bible and Jesus and Mary.
This structure dates back to about a thousand years ago. In the legends about the construction of this monastery, it is said that two Greeks on the way saw the images of the Holy Mary on the wall. Therefore, they have decided to build the Sumela Monastery to dedicate it to the Holy Mary. In 2015, this monastery was temporarily closed due to renovation. Of course, in August 2018, this structure again hosted tourists from all over the world.
Trabzon Castle
Trabzon Castle is one of the other attractions of Trabzon that can be visited on a Türkiye tour. This structure is a survivor of the Byzantine era. Three castles make this structure. Experts believe that the upper part dates back to 2000 BC. In the past, it was used as a city castle. Alexius II of Trabzon also built middle and lower castles. However, the signature of Muhammad II, the Ottoman Sultan, can be seen on one of the gates. This castle is generally located in the center of Trabzon and on top of a hill at the highest point of the city.

In Arakli area, you can see Trabzon Castle. Very old stones were used in the construction of this castle. Trabzon Castle had many uses throughout history. But one of its main uses can be mentioned for surveillance and identification of naval attacks during the time of Sultan Mohammad Fatih. This fort consists of three upper forts, middle fort and lower fort.
The upper fortress
The use of this fort was to protect the inner parts. Buildings such as a bathhouse, a palace and a tower have been built near this fort due to high security. At the highest point of the hill, the fortress walls are located. You can find many books and documents related to the Ottoman era in the Trabzon Museum located near the Trabzon Castle.

The middle fortress part of the castle was built by the order of Emperor Alexios II during the Byzantine era. The middle fortress has better conditions than other parts of the castle. Old gates, tannery, church, mosque, inn, etc. can also be seen in the middle fort.
The lower fortress
The walls of the lower fort start from the castle, that is, the lower fort from the western parts of the hill and continue to the lowest part of the hill. In terms of length, the lower fort is the longest part of the Trabzon castle. Baths, mosques, markets and many residential neighborhoods can be seen around here.
Trabzon Hagia Sophia Museum
In the past, Hagia Sophia was originally a Greek Orthodox church. This church was changed to a mosque in 1584. Hagia Sophia Museum dates back to the 13th century. At that time, Trabzon was considered the capital of the Trabzon Empire. This ancient structure, located near the sea, has now been converted into a museum.

In this museum you can see the most beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture. The construction of the Hagia Sophia Museum dates back to the Byzantine Empire. Hagia Sophia, in addition to historical and old attractions and architecture, has strange stories and traditions to tell. The appearance of this building cannot prove to you the specialness of Hagia Sophia. As soon as you enter the interior of the building, you will be fascinated by the paintings that are taken from the stories of the Bible on the ceiling and walls. The word Hagia Sophia means holy wisdom. If you look at the ceiling of this museum, you will see tiles with crescent moon and star design.
Vazelon Monastery
This monastery was built in 270 AD. Historians believe that the income from it was spent on the construction of Sumela Monastery. Vazelon Monastery was once one of the richest Greek Orthodox monasteries. The paintings on its wall are very spectacular and attractive. Iranians and Turks have destroyed this monastery many times. Until it was completely destroyed in 1922. Now all that remains of it are ruined yet charming ruins.
Ataturk Palace
Atatürk Palace was built in the early 19th century by the order of Konstantin Kabayanitis as a summer residence. A few years after its construction, the Russians captured this palace. Constantine left Trabzon according to the Treaty of Lausanne. In 1924, Atatürk chose this palace as his resting place. At those times, the people of the city gave this palace to Atatürk and his wife. After all these events in those years, in 1943, this magnificent palace was converted into a museum. Every year, people from all over the world visit this historical monument.
On Suyuk Su hill in Trabzon city, you will see one of the most stunning symbols of Trabzon. The dreamy view of this palace attracts the attention of every tourist at first glance. Uzun Gol

Golbahar Khatun Mosque and Tomb
One of the oldest and most authentic Islamic buildings in Trabzon is the Golbahar Khatun Mosque and Tomb. This place was built to commemorate Sultan Yavuz Salim Zavel and his mother Golbahar Khatun. This mosque was built by Sultan Salim, the son of Golbahar Khatun, and the construction of this structure was completed in 1514. Of this structure, only the mosque and tomb of Golbahar Khatun remain. Its mansion, school and bath have been destroyed in the past.
The building of Golbahar Khatun Mosque is a part of the Zawili mosques group. Zawili mosques have a special type of Ottoman era architecture. Dark gray and yellowish white stones are used in its arches and minarets. There is a marble altar in this structure. Next to this mosque, there is a tea garden and a wooden sculpture warehouse. Today, in this mosque, we are witnessing the holding of Qur’an training courses for teenagers and young people.
Park Zagnos Tepe
Despite having a green and unspoiled nature, it will be difficult to find a large green space in the center of Trabzon. Many historical structures can be seen in this part of the city. The new and wide boulevards towards the center of Trabzon have made it easy to navigate in the city.
